Make Your Bed
I haven’t always been a bed-maker. My mother got tired of hassling me about it in my teen years. I just closed my door. Out of sight, out of mind, right? In my early married years, same thing. At both times in my life, I was in too much of a hurry to get out the door for school or work. The kids came, and forget about it.
Then something happened about 10 years ago. I had a spare two minutes and decided to make my bed. The rest of the room was a wreck, but the square footage that my bed took up was tidy. I’d love to say that it inspired me to clean the rest of the room, but I can’t remember. I do know that I liked the feeling of coming home after long hours to a nice made bed. I have kept up the practice.
One of my co-workers made a comment about an unkempt student. Her quote was, “He reminds me of an unmade bed.” The analogy screamed at me. I knew exactly what she was saying. Was I that disheveled person before my bed-making habit? I don’t think so. The bed-making habit has helped me to look at other things in my life.
- Are my relationships an unmade bed?
- Are my finances an unmade bed?
- Are my work habits an unmade bed?
- Is my home an unmade bed?
- Is my spiritual life an unmade bed?
It’s a small investment of time to make a bed. It makes the quality of my life much better. There are over 5,000,000 (yes, that’s over 5 million) sites on Google about the benefits of making your bed. I learned it the old-fashioned way. I just did it.
I”m working on the other aspects of my life to keep their beds made.
